ABSTRACT
Across the globe, a rising tide of threats - human expansion, climate change, and extreme event are jeopardizing natural ecosystems. Decline of natural resource, biodiversity and environmental pollutions are a growing concern, demanding immediate action. To safeguard natural ecosystems such, we need to track changes in environment with precision and timeliness.
The urgent need for fast, continuous, and affordable monitoring systems has driven the rise of image analysis as a powerful tool. Unlike traditional methods, remote cameras offer continuous, real-time data, making them invaluable for understanding natural processes.
TOPICS
This special session invites original research exploring how image analysis tackles diverse envionmental monitoring challenges. We welcome submissions on (but are not limited to):
- New image analysis algorithms and techniques for environmental monitoring;
- Applications of image analysis in specific water bodies (rivers, lakes, oceans);
- Integration of image analysis with other monitoring methods (chemical, biological);
- Development of image-based sensor systems for real-time monitoring;
- Case studies and applications of image analysis for water quality management;
- Challenges and opportunities associated with using image analysis for environmental monitoring.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS
Francesco Isgrò, is currently Associate Professor in Computer Science at the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Elettrica e delle Tecnologie dell'Informazione, Università di Napoli Federico II (IT). He received a PhD in Computer Science from Heriot-Watt University (UK). His research interests are computer vision, pattern recognition and machine learning, biomedical image analysis. He is author of about one hundred publications on international journal and conference proceedings.
Salvatore Manfreda, is Full Professor of Water Management, Hydrology and Hydraulic Constructions at University of Naples Federico II. He started his career as research associate at Princeton University in the period 2004-2005. He has been researcher and associate professor at University of Basilicata in the period 2006-2019. He has been appointed as visiting professor at the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies al Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh) from 2008 up to 2010. His research activities focus on distributed hydrological modelling, flood risk assessment, stochastic processes in hydrology, river monitoring and UAS-based monitoring. He has been the Chair of the COST Action HARMONIOUS – “Harmonization of UAS techniques for agricultural and natural ecosystems monitoring”. He is currently chair of the working group MOXXI by IAHS and member of the WMO HydroHub think tank. His research activities lead to more than 120 publications on peer reviewed journals, book chapters and proceedings. Among others, he edited the book “Unmanned Aerial Systems for Monitoring Soil, Vegetation, and River Systems” by Elsevier.<(p>
