ABSTRACT
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is greatly impacting on the study of the brain and nervous system in many ways. Machine learning, deep learning, and statistical learning algorithms are increasingly being used to extract knowledge from structural and functional neural data (i.e., signals and images), to detect and predict outcomes of neurological and psychiatric disorders, and to support clinical procedures and decisions. This special session wants to elucidate how recent AI advances can revolutionize the management of brain and nervous system disorders and improve patient outcomes.
Methodological trends, advances, and criticalities in the field of AI-based neural engineering will be presented to discuss the potential of AI in the study of the central and peripheral nervous system.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS
Stefania Coelli, is Assistant Professor in the Bioengineering section of the Dept. of Electronic, Information and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano, with reference to the B3LAB laboratory (https://www.b3lab.deib.polimi.it/). She received her PhD in Bioengineering from Politecnico di Milano in 2019 and developed her scientific activity as post-doc fellow at the Politecnico di Milano (2019-2023) and the Institute of Systems Neuroscience (INS) in Marseille in 2021 (CRUI grant, GO for IT programme). Her main research interests lie in the field of biomedical signal processing and neuroimaging, with focus on the central nervous system and brain-related disorders.
Eleonora Maggioni, is Assistant Professor of Bioengineering in the Dept. of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano (B3LAB). She received her PhD in Bioengineering from Politecnico di Milano in 2014 and developed her post-doc research activity at the Dept. of Neurosciences and Mental Health of the Fondazione Policlinico of Milan. Her research is conducted in collaboration between Politecnico and Policlinico and focuses on the development of methods for integrating neuroimaging, electrophysiological, and neuromodulation techniques -mainly MRI, EEG, ECG, NIRS, TMS, and VR- and for merging gene-environment, clinical, and neural information in the study of psychiatric illnesses.
