SPECIAL EVENT
Artificial Intelligence for Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science: the Metrological perspective
Scientific evidence has become more and more relevant in criminal investigation. Lately, the amount of data that are made available to investigators and triers of fact has significantly increased, especially when evidence of a crime must be searched in computers, cell phones and cloud storage. AI agents have become essential in analyzing such a huge amount of data, parsing it, converting voice messages into text, so that they can be easily indexed, just to mention some of the most relevant fields of investigation.
However, the most recent AI agents are characterized by opacity in their operations, so that it is difficult to validate the results they provide, especially when the input data might be affected by non-negligible uncertainty, as with data experimentally collected in the field. A metrologically-sound approach to the validation of the AI agents is therefore of utmost importance, in granting validity, both foundational and as applied, to these tools, so that they can be admitted in judicial proceedings.
This event aims at discussing these issues among the different figures acting in criminal investigation and the subsequent trials.
